There’s much more to being a pet owner than simply bringing one home. It becomes your responsibility to ensure that they live a healthy and happy life, and if you are in the San Antonio area, Oaks North Animal Hospital is here to help you, and your pet, achieve that long, happy and healthy life with comprehensive exams, vaccinations, spaying and neutering, microchipping and parasite prevention.

Exams and Vaccines: The Essentials of Kitten and Puppy Care

Your new furry friend will need to come in to see our veterinarian in San Antonio regularly for the first few months of their life to receive comprehensive wellness examinations and routine vaccinations and booster shots. This helps us discover any current or underlying health issues while giving them the tools their body’s need to prevent the onset of a number of diseases in their lifetime.

Puppy Vaccinations and Boosters—Dogs should have a DHPP vaccine to stave off distemper, hepatitis, parainfluenza and parvovirus. A non-core Bordetella shot may be advised for certain puppies.

Cat Vaccinations and Boosters—Core vaccines include the FVRCP to protect them against feline viral rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, and panleukopenia (feline distemper). A common non-core recommendation includes FeLV (feline leukemia virus), as this disease is highly contagious and growing in occurrence in cats.

Spay and Neuter Your New Pet

It has been proven that pets who undergo spaying and neutering typically live longer and healthier lives. This is because the procedure seems to calm aggressions, lessen the stress on their bodies, and reduce the chances of the development of certain reproduction system related cancers and infections. Your puppy or kitten can generally be spayed or neutered around 6 months of age. Of course, this also helps reduce the number of unwanted pets that are often unfortunately euthanized annually in San Antonio.

Pet Microchipping and Parasite Prevention in San Antonio

It’s no secret that fleas and ticks are commonplace here in Texas, and there are also many places your pup or kitty can wander off to. Take care of all of those worries with a quick, affordable microchipping procedure for your pet that can help them find their way back into your arms. Make sure that those fleas, ticks, heart worms and other parasites stay out of your lives. Our vet can recommend effective preventives to meet your pet’s needs.
