Tips for New Puppy Owners

Bringing a new puppy home is an exciting time in your life. At Oaks North Animal Hospital in San Antonio, TX, our veterinarian will examine your new puppy and provide him or her with the necessary care. In the meantime, here are some tips to follow to keep your new pet out of an animal hospital at home with you.

Make Your Home Safe

The first step in owning a puppy is making your home. Electrical cables should be kept out of their reach, as should anything your puppy should not chew. Limit your pet’s access to rooms that are safe for them to be in. If you look at your home through the eyes of your dog, it should be easy to identify everything that might be a danger to them.

Purchase Necessary Supplies

Purchasing the supplies your puppy will need is best done before you bring them home. At the very least you will need a bed, leash, collar, and bowls for both food and water. Talk to your veterinarian about the best food for your puppy.

It's also important to have cleaning supplies on hand that are designed to treat stains caused by puppy accidents. These accidents are inevitable until you have been able to house train them. Last but not least, having toys for your puppy to play with is just as important. It will help them adjust to their new home and help you bond with them too.

Instill Good Habits

By instilling good habits in your new puppy from the beginning, he or she will adjust to their new home more easily. One habit to teach them is not to bark unless there is a reason for it. You can often accomplish this by using squeaky toys to get their attention focused on you. It's also recommended you get them used to birds or the other pets in your house. Introductions should be made once the puppy appears comfortable in his or her surroundings.
