Which Dog Breed is Right for You

It's All in the Breed

Being a dog owner is rewarding and fun. However, not all dogs are the best choice for all people. Breed is a key factor in determining if a dog will be a good fit. We've provided a few highlights of breeds and their different characteristics. At Oaks North Animal Hospital, a San Antonio veterinary practice, we can provide more details to help you choose the best breed for your family.

Adapt to Apartment Living

Typical apartment leases allow only small dogs. However, size is not the only factor. Energy level and propensity to bark are also important considerations. Breeds that adapt particularly well to apartment living include many terriers and spaniels, basenji, pugs, Shih Tzu, dachshunds, bichon frise, and chihuahuas.

Kid-Friendly

Dogs that are gentle and take the activity and noise of children in stride include bulldogs, pugs, Boston terriers, Bernese mountain dogs, Brussels griffon, basset hounds, beagles, Cavalier King Charles spaniels, and golden retrievers.

Dog-Friendly

If you have other dogs in the home or expect you'll want to put your dog in daycare, the ability to get along well with other dogs is important. Breeds that are typically dog-friendly include great Pyrenees, puggle, Samoyed, Siberian husky, Labrador retrievers, beagles, and Cavalier King Charles spaniels.

Easily Trained

Some dogs quickly learn to associate commands with actions and are eager to please. Others require more patience or more treats to train. Some examples of easily trainable breeds are collies, most spaniels, most terriers, Maltese, Pomeranians, Havanese, Goldendoodles, Labradoodles, and Labrador retrievers.

Hypoallergenic Dogs

Dogs that tend to work well with allergy sufferers include poodles, Bichon frises, Maltese, Bolognese, and some terriers.

Less Barky

All dogs bark sometimes, but some breeds do so only when necessary. These include mastiffs, Pekingese, pugs, golden retrievers, and St. Bernards.

Calm Vs Energetic

Energy level also varies by breed. Calmer breeds include basset hounds, Bolognese, and Pekinese. High-energy dog breeds include golden retrievers, Yorkshire terriers, and poodles.
