Pet Exams

What to Expect from Pet Exams

If you’re new to pet parenting, you may be unfamiliar with pet exams. Pet wellness exams can help keep your pet healthy throughout his life by uncovering health problems in their early stages, so your pet can get immediate treatment. If you live in the San Antonio area, you can bring your kitent or pup to Oaks North Animal Hospital for dog or cat exams. Here’s what you can expect from our San Antonio veterinary during a wellness exam.

Temperature/Weight: We’ll start by taking your pet’s temperature and recording his weight. If your pet is overweight, we may recommend changes to his diet or exercise regimen to help him lose excess pounds that can compromise his health.

Head to Tail Inspection: Our veterinarian will inspect your pet’s body from head to tail to check the state of his health. We’ll check his eyes, nose, and ears for signs of infections or diseases. We’ll listen to his heart and lungs for signs of heart valve problems or respiratory illnesses. We’ll also test his muscles and joints for arthritis.

Skin and Fur: The condition of your pet’s fur and skin can reflect the condition of his health. We’ll examine your pet’s fur and skin for signs of pest infestations, allergies, infections, and disease. The sooner we detect dermatology issues, the sooner your pet can receive treatment.

Mouth: Dental issues can affect your pet’s overall health. During cat or dog exams, we’ll examine your dog or cat’s mouth for signs of gum infections or damaged teeth. If dental issues are detected, we’ll make an appointment to have your pet come in for treatment. We also offer annual dental exams and cleanings to maintain your pet’s oral health over the years.

Our vet may also discuss vaccinations, parasite control, and spay/neuter procedures with you during your pet’s exam to ensure these matters are taken care of as needed.
