No one is a fan of bad breath, but if you notice your dog's breath has an increased ability to clear the room, it could be a sign of a dental problem. At Oaks North Animal Hospital, we're proud to be your veterinarian near you in San Antonio, TX. Our vet and pet hospital care team are excited to get to know you and your dog.
Why is Dog Dental Care Important?
Over time, plaque and tartar can build up on your dog's teeth. Left untreated, this can lead to cavities, gingivitis, broken teeth, and abscesses that make it difficult for your pet to eat. Taking care of your dog's teeth regularly helps to decrease the risk of dental issues and allows you to spot signs of a problem early on, enabling simple diagnosis and reducing the likelihood of extractions.
Cleaning Your Dog's Teeth
We recommend that you have your dog's teeth professionally cleaned at our office once a year. In the meantime, it's important to take care of your dog's teeth at home as well. You'll need toothpaste made specifically for dogs (you cannot use human toothpaste, as it can harm your pet's health) and a dog toothbrush.
Start by simply taking time to touch your pet's mouth and move on to touching their teeth. If your pet is not comfortable with either of these actions, take a few days to allow them to get used to their mouth being handled. Once your pet is comfortable, offer them a taste of their toothpaste and try to brush a single tooth. Each time you brush their teeth, add a few more until you're eventually able to brush your dog's whole mouth.
